Week 850

What’s this? I’m blogging about my work on a weekly basis – a simple way to track and archive whatever it is I spend my time on.
It was a short week thanks to King’s Day and spring break, but I did have a busy Tuesday, visiting Tom Rutjens at Codeglue in Rotterdam to talk through the current version of team-based procedural shooter Antegods, and work on the Gamefonds grant application we’re gearing up for.
After that I took the fast train to Amsterdam to visit Paul Sebes and Willem Bisseling at their agency. I pitched them some ideas from the hybrid writing sphere and they seemed to be intrigued. Let’s see where it goes from here.
On Wednesday I did my quarterly taxes, which went rather smoothly; I suppose that smoothness is the best one can hope for when doing taxes.
On Thursday I gave a talk to final-year creative writing students at ArtEZ in Arnhem, about my hybrid writing practices and projects. I spoke for almost three hours, which is the longest I ever talked about this (and probably any) topic. The students were polite and took a lot of notes; I hope they didn’t steal all my ideas. When it was over and I’d caught my breath, Dennis Gaens (who introduced me to his students and produces the excellent Ondercast) taught me a few things about audio and we had a quick pizza.
Finally, in the ‘random’ category, I…
- Listened to a podcast interview I’d done with Alex Lie-Hap-Po a while back. It’s about my switch from games journalism to hybrid writing, as well as work rituals and tools.
- Did an email interview with Dutch studio Ostrich Banditos, which appeared on the new Dutch Games Association platform when it launched on Friday. I’ll be contributing to that regularly.
- Saw Micha Wertheim’s latest show on Saturday, which was genius.
