Week 814

What’s this? I’m blogging about my work on a weekly basis – a simple way to track and archive whatever it is I spend my time on.

Last week on Monday, I had coffee with David Nieborg, who was back in The Netherlands after a couple of months at MIT in Boston. It was the first day after my vacation, and talking through both of our projects helped to get the car back on the road.

On Tuesday, I wrote a short review of Hohokum and edited a review of Road Not Taken by Rogier Kahlmann. The next day, these were printed along with last week’s three reviews, making for a nice game page in nrc.next.

Tuesday afternoon, I visited Joris van Ballegooijen and Marjoleine Timmer at the Creative Industries Fund NL, who helped me set my priorities straight for my Hybrid Writer’s Toolkit project. I’ll be working on a new grant application for that during the next few months. For the rest of the week, I collected and sorted related notes, which is a big task that I’m far from ready with.

On Wednesday, I published the escape room piece on this website (in Dutch): Gestommel, gegil, een snerpende tandartsboor… – Van minigame tot escaperoom.

On Friday, I met with Martijn van Best at Dutch Game Garden. We talked about the upcoming Indigo event, showcasing new Dutch games, but also about the historical novel he’s working on. It’s always fun to discuss the craft with fellow writers, especially if they’re open to things like read testing.

Finally, on Saturday morning, I finished an article for the Dutch Official PlayStation Magazine: a profile on game development studio Crystal Dynamics, that turns out to have quite an interesting history.
